Artist Statement:
Many years ago I had a traumatic experience with a very old piece of wood. This experience started me onto the path of awareness of the interconnection of all things. Much of my copper work has become representational of “nature” as an effort to draw peoples’ attention to the world around them. If they begin to notice things in a different way, my hope is that they will begin to think about their connection to all of creation to be truly alive.
I work in gold, silver, and copper. I have come to enjoy working with copper because it lets me work on a much larger scale. The colors that it will take make it a fitting choice for “nature” works. What excites me most is watching the metal move into the shapes that exist in my minds’ eye. I use the whole range of metalworking techniques with an emphasis on forging and raising. I treat the metal as if it were “clay” and my tools as simply extensions of my fingers to work that “clay”.
To watch the metal move exactly where I want it with each hammer blow is to watch something come alive. I strive to give the whole piece that sense of “Life”. If that sense of “Life” stirs in you a feeling of pleasure, appreciation, or amusement, then I have truly succeeded in my efforts to be an “artist” .
